Songfacts®:

  • Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine wrote this song with the band's guitarist, Marty Friedman. The lyrics are about not being able to trust someone you love; possibly due to an infidelity or a suspected infidelity between a couple causes great pain for each member of the relationship. It makes some commentary on the hopelessness of relationships when you can't trust your partner: "Why does trust have to equal pain?" >>

  • According to Mustaine, a real relationship inspired this song. "I could tell you a lot about it, but no matter how I justify it, it's not going to come across as painful as it was," he said when the song was released. "Many times, I've had beautiful relationships destroyed by being led astray. I'm not going to say I am perfect or without blame, but I think singing about it is maybe a healing process going back into my life."
  • The bridge slows it down with a string section provided by the Nashville Symphony Orchestra before the heavy guitars come back in.
  • Liz Friedlander directed the music video, which includes lots of '90s elements like white flashes, off-kilter camera moves, and quick shots of random people with blank expressions. Megadeth doesn't use genre-specific directors - Friedlander's other clients include Alanis Morissette, Celine Dion and Ashlee Simpson.
  • Megadeth earned a #5 placing on the Mainstream Rock chart with "Trust," which was the first single from their Cryptic Writings album. Thrash metal - the band's bailiwick - didn't do very well on this chart, which was most filled with songs in the alternative genre. Megadeth moved in this direction at the urging of Marty Friedman. According to Dave Mustaine, Friedman "really liked Dishwalla," who had a big hit with "Counting Blue Cars."

  • The Man from Up Your AssThis intro sounds pretty damm close to "Enter Sandman"......is there a reason for that?
  • Galloway Mark from Lasvegas Nevada Great song awesome band.
  • Judie from Joppa, MdThis song is awesome. I love the intro with the drums. It's heavy but yet kinda sad. Its definitely one of their best.

    From another female fan

Rough translation: "My body aches from mistakes; betrayed by lust, we lie to each other so much, that in nothing we trust... God help me please, on my knees; betrayed by lust, we lie to each other so much, that in nothing we trust".

Then there's another bit where he says:
    Spanish:
"¿Como pudo sucederme esto a mi? Miento cuando digo: 'confía en mi', no puedo creer que esto sea verdad... La confianza duele, por que la confianza es igual al sufrimiento".

    English:
"How could this happen to me? I lie when I say: 'trust me'. I can't believe this is true. Trust hurts, trust equals suffering".
  • Bryan from Vega Alta, Puerto RicoOn this album there's a bonus version in with spanish parts.

    I love the spanish version.
It's fun when Dave mixes some of his songs with other languages; like "A Tout Le Monde".
  • Dave from Albuquerque, NmI always thought it had to do with Daves battle with drugs along with his close friend, hence 'My body aches from mistakes Betrayed by lust' the drugs taking its toll, 'We lied to each other so much That in nothing we trust' him and JR fighting side by side but failing. Anyhow its a great song and probably my favorite
  • Cody from Kansas City, MoNot to be a douche or anything, but...It's "Why does trust equal suffereing?"
  • Riki from Tampere, FinlandAgreed.
The intro is... sensitive but powerfull, if you get what I mean.
And the chorus is just plain epic.
