Songfacts®:

  • This was written by the Tin Pan Alley songwriters Carl Sigman and Bob Hilliard. In The Carl Sigman Songbook, Sigman's son Michael writes that the song is "a simple story of a lover who's picked the wrong person to fall in love with. It zoomed to #1 on the charts via a finger-snapping rendition by Mel Tormé, and was also covered by Bing Crosby, Sammy Kaye, and a host of others. In the '70s the song was revived as a country hit for Dottie West and still later was assayed with 'killer' verve by Jerry Lee Lewis."
