Songfacts®:

  • Al Gore asked Melissa Etheridge to write the theme song for his documentary An Inconvenient Truth. This song was the result and the singer explained to Rolling Stone that she found the whole experience very inspiring. She said: "I was working with someone who was at the front of the whole wave. I saw Al Gore stand up, and in a summer, I saw the world change."
  • The song also reinforced Etheridge's developing belief in the theory of "intentional reality." She told Rolling Stone: "I've read hundreds of books, everything from physics to Buddhism to Pleiadians - you know, outer-space extraterrestrials - and they're all talking about the same thing, which thrills me. They're talking about intentional reality. If you can get to that truth, that everything that happens to you is because you've intended it, then you realize how powerful we are."
  • This won the 2006 Academy Award for Best Original Song. In her acceptance speech Etheridge said: "Mostly I have to thank Al Gore for inspiring us, for inspiring me, showing that caring about the Earth is not Republican or, Democrat it's not red or blue, it's all green."
