Songfacts®:

  • The lead single from Lifer, "Even If" is a reminder that in difficult situations that don't seem to go away, God is still worthy. Frontman Bart Millard explained: "This song is a declaration to God that even if He went silent and never said another word, He's still worthy to be praised and that He's our greatest hope in the midst of the trial."
  • The song reached #1 on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart, which combines airplay, streaming and sales data. It was the band's record-extending 12th topper on the tally.
  • The song was written towards the end of the writing process for Lifer, and was inspired by Bart Milliard's diabetic son. Bassist Nathan Cochran explained to NewReleaseToday how the track came to be written:

"Tim Timmons has become a close friend of the band. He had written essentially a chorus to a song that he never finished. In the middle of writing for the album, Bart went over to Tim's and was unloading about how Bart's oldest son Sam has been a type one diabetic since he was two years old. They had a rough day with check-ups. Now his son is fifteen, and being a teenager, he doesn't always want to take care of himself. Whether a good or bad check-up, it is a reminder to all of us that this is something he deals with every day. Bart was unloading this on Tim Timmons, forgetting that Tim is living with a form of cancer every day and has for years now.

Bart left thinking that Tim wasn't really listening, but he actually wrote everything down and sent Bart a message, and it ended up being almost word for word the chorus of this song. It was one of those moments based on life experiences, just like our other songs. Tim sang this chorus and then Bart sang it to us and said he thought this was what we were missing for the album. We finished it out fairly quickly."
