Blackout 2 was the rap duo's second album together. Their previous set Blackout came out in 1999. Method Man explained to MTV News why it took ten years for the two of them to put out a new album. "I had obligations. Doc had obligations. There were things going on [with] the label. Staff changes. That's what happened."
