Songfacts®:

  • This is a song that was written in and about Chapman's hometown, Leeds. He was born at Hunslet in 1941. That much is true, though it remains to be seen how much of the anecdote associated with it is.

As he told his audience at Corks Wine Bar, Otley, in March 2011, he was browsing in a Leeds bookshop one day when "this beautifully dressed lady of what's sometimes called a certain age, walked up to me and said... 'It's Michael, isn't it?'

I said 'Yeah', cos I knew..."

    Laughter.

"...and I had just heard these faint alarm bells going off somewhere, and she said, 'We were married for four years.'"

This drew even more laughter, and he added the song was an attempt at recompense.
  • Like most of Chapman's compositions, "After All This Time" is performed with solo acoustic guitar accompaniment. >>>
