Songfacts®:

  • "Ambrosia" is a wistful reminiscence by Michael Head about his previous band Shack, written shortly before the death of drummer Iain Templeton in December 2022. "When I first played it in rehearsals I broke down," he told The Guardian.
  • The song recounts stories of adventure and camaraderie, including a memorable incident where the band left their tour manager, Eastie, outside a pizzeria in Italy and had to return to rescue him. Its themes of nostalgia and reminiscence are also echoed in Michael Head's memoir, Ciao Ciao Bambino: A Magical Memoir, which he wrote during the same period.

"I was concentrating on writing the book and was enjoying reminiscing," Head told Uncut magazine. "It was incredible. And fortunately as well, songs were coming from that, which I didn't plan but it was really positive. Songs like 'Ambrosia' they just kind of wrote themselves... Your subconscious is looking at all this, flitting from here to there. Going upstairs with my guitar for a break, I just started writing the songs."
  • Musically, "Ambrosia" captures this same reflective, bittersweet air, conjuring the spirit of those unruly yet formative days. Former Coral guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones shaped its sound, his production enhancing the song's nostalgic tone.
