Songfacts®:

  • This melancholy ballad is the closing track from Michael Jackson's first posthumous album of original material, Michael. The song finds the King of Pop missing a lover who has left him. He croons: "Take away this never ending sorrow, take this lonely feeling from my soul."
  • The song was written at the time of the Thriller album and was co-produced by one of the executors of his estate, John McClain. The string section features famed arranger David Campbell (Adam Lambert, Metallica, My Chemical Romance).
  • According to notes on the iTunes Ping site where the song debuted, it was always a favorite of Jackson's. "Michael always liked the song and would pull it back out of the vaults for each subsequent album project but never found the right home for it," the site revealed. "Here it finds its place as the bittersweet closing to the stellar collection."
  • String arranger David Campbell is the father of famed alternative rock singer-songwriter Beck.
