Songfacts®:

  • Michael Rice is a singer from Hartlepool in North East England. He first came to the public attention when he won the first series of BBC One's singing competition All Together Now in 2018. He also made an appearance on The X Factor four years previously.

Rice was chosen to fly the flag for the UK at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest. He was picked in a TV viewers' vote on February 8, 2019.
  • The power ballad was written by Laurell Barke, Anna-Klara Folin, John Lundvik and Jonas Thander. Asked by the BBC what the song's lyrics mean to him, Rice replied:

"I grew up with my mam, and my dad had drug problems and stuff like that, and later on I got to know him. He used to know I was singing and he was dead proud of me. When I'm singing them words at the beginning – 'Hear these words that I sing to you' - it just reminds me of him."

The singer added that his father has now passed away and winning All Together Now, and representing Great Britain in Eurovision, "would make his world."
  • "Bigger Than Us" came in last at the Eurovision Song contest, receiving just 11 points. Rice was the fourth UK act to finish last in the competition.
