Songfacts®:

  • Michelle Branch was a teenager when she wrote this song, and while teenage love can be very powerful, she had yet to experience it. Branch demonstrated a sharp songwriting acumen soon after she started playing guitar at age 14. She knew she wanted to write love songs, and did so imagining what it would be like to feel those emotions. "I'd Rather Be In Love" is a simple, but powerful idea: We'd rather be in love than alone.
  • Michelle Branch initially released this song on Broken Bracelet, an album she recorded independently in 2000 when she was just 16. She sold copies at her shows and used some of the songs as a demo that earned her a deal with Maverick Records, the label run by Madonna. "I'd Rather Be In Love" was one of the Broken Bracelet tracks included on her Maverick debut, The Spirit Room, which propelled her to stardom in 2001, selling two million copies and making her a favorite on MTV.
