Songfacts®:

  • "Sooner Or Later" was released in June 2009 as the lead single from what was supposed to be Michelle Branch's first country solo album, Everything Comes and Goes. She started work on the album in the fall of 2007, but her label, Warner Music Nashville, was churning through executives, making it impossible to coordinate a release. The album ended up being condensed to a six-song EP and released in 2010. Poorly promoted, it went nowhere, and a frustrated Branch left the label for her next release.
  • Branch said during an acoustic performance that this song is about being the "best friend" to the guy you like instead of the "girlfriend."
  • Liz Friedlander, who helmed Branch's videos for her first two singles, "Everywhere" and "All You Wanted," also directed this song's video. Branch blogged regarding the promo's shoot: "We shot out in the desert and it was 104 degrees for the most part. I even learned how to drive stick shift!"
