Songfacts®:

  • Miguel is one of two sons of a Mexican-American father and an African-American mother, who was raised in Los Angeles' San Pedro neighborhood. In early 2017, Miguel traveled to Mexico's Michoacán region for the first time to meet some of his extended family. "It's amazing how somehow you cannot know someone, you've never met them, but the energy is like you've known them your whole life," Miguel told Billboard: "Before [my Latin heritage] wasn't really a big part of my life - that trip to Mexico really changed it for me. It made me want to make music that gave me a reason to go back."

Miguel's Mexican trip spawned this track, his first predominantly Spanish song. "I'm really proud of it - I only had to change one lyric after I had a couple of people listen to it who know Spanish better than me," he said with a laugh.
  • "Caramelo Duro" translates to "Hard Candy." The words may be a different language, but it's another signature Miguel sex metaphor.
  • The song features a vocal contribution by Colombian singer-songwriter Kali Uchis. She is also a frequent collaborator with rapper/producer Tyler, The Creator and also sung on Gorillaz's Humanz track "She's My Collar" and on Major Lazer's Peace is the Mission cut "Wave."
