Songfacts®:

  • Mike Posner is an American singer, songwriter, and producer. This single is taken from his second mixtape One Foot Out the Door, which he recorded whilst still a student at Duke University in North Carolina. The original version featured Hip-Hop artist Big Sean, but he was later removed on the single mix.
  • The song was written by Posner in his Duke University dorm room and was inspired by the types of women he has encountered on the campus there. He recalled on The Ralphie Radio Show: "I can't tell you like after the song came out like how many girls from my past came out of the woodwork and were like 'I know this song is about me. It's like, 'Ugh, you're so vain. It's not about you. But, now that you're saying that, it kinda is.'"
  • Here's some "cool" chart trivia: This was the fifth song with the word "cool" in its title to reach the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. The other four singles to do so were:
1966 "Cool Jerk," The Capitols #7
1972 "Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress)", The Hollies, #2
1980 "Cool Change," Little River Band, #10
1985 "Cool It Now," New Edition, #4
An honorary mentions goes to Paul Davis' 1981 hit "Cool Night,"which peaked at #11.
Squeeze's "Cool For Cats," which reached #2 on the UK singles chart in 1979 is the most successful "cool" song on that side of the Atlantic.
  • Posner graduated from Duke University in May 2010 with a BA in Sociology and Business.
  • The song is also included on Posner's debut album, 31 Minutes to Takeoff. Said Posner regarding the album title, "Something happens 31 minutes into the record. You're going to have to listen to find out what it is. All I can say is that both the listener and I will be in a higher place when it's over."
  • This song had a symmetrical chart position run on the Hot 100 spanning 11 weeks: 8-7-6-7-6-7-6-7-6-7-8.
  • This featured in the Sims 3: Ambitions video game. It was converted to Simlish, the language of the Sims, under the title of Cooler Than Me (Gooba Da Mwee)."
