Songfacts®:

  • Linkin Park frontman Mike Shinoda found himself facing his demons following the suicide of his bandmate Chester Bennington on July 20, 2017. The vocalist felt he needed to process and talk about things directly from his point of view, so he started writing songs as a coping mechanism. As he accumulated a collection of material, Shinoda realized he was beginning to regain control of his life. This song is about how his decision to release the music he'd written helped him find his way back to a happier state of mind.

    They'll tell you I don't care anymore
    And I hope you'll know that's a lie
'Cause I've found what I have been waiting for
But to get there means crossing a line

Shinoda explained to Genius: "Here, 'Crossing A Line' means deciding to do something that is risky. Starting a solo project from the ground up, as opposed to using an existing platform (Linkin Park or Fort Minor) will inevitably be more work, harder to do, and may not agree with everyone. But I realized that it was the right thing for me."
