Songfacts®:

  • The first single from the eighth Mike + The Mechanics album Let Me Fly, "Don't Know What Came Over Me" is about a guy who ruined his life in a single evening. "Here's this guy who's happily married, loves his lady and everything's wonderful," Mike Rutherford explained. "Then, one night, he goes AWOL and loses everything by having a one night-stand. It was a moment of madness and he's beyond remorseful. Was he forgiven? The song just leaves him hanging. And no, it's not autobiographical!"
  • For Mike + The Mechanics, there are certain songs that come together quickly once they have the title and chorus - "All I Need Is A Miracle" is an example. Mike Rutherford told Songfacts that this is another one. The meaning of the phrase, "'Don't know what came over me,' it conjures up an image in your mind, doesn't it, about a situation? And in a sense, it's the same sort of thing: You've said the whole song in that one line, 'Don't know what came over me.'"
  • Andrew Roachford sang lead on this track and co-wrote it with Rutherford and Johnny Hates Jazz lead singer Clark Datchler.
