Songfacts®:

  • Here, Miley Cyrus is addressing a romantic interest, giving them a warning that she's about to walk out on their relationship. The singer admits the fault lies with herself, as she's not into commitment and as soon as a romance gets serious she presses the self-destruct button.
  • The title of this you're-too-good-for-me song alludes to Cyrus admitting her lover is a better person than her.

It's not your fault I ruin everything
And it's not your fault I can't be what you need
Baby, angels like you can't fly down here with me

Cyrus sees herself as a fallen angel roaming around down in Hell; she is totally wrong for her angelic lover up in Heaven.
  • Many of the tracks on Plastic Hearts find Cyrus taking an unapologetic, cold-blooded view of romance, but here she's showing some regret. In apologizing to her lover for breaking their heart in advance, she's doing her best to soften the blow. Speaking to Apple Music, Cyrus said: "This song is saying - there is like some remorse to it - all these things should add up on paper to 'You're the one for me,' but I know that you're wrong for me. Maybe it's part of being someone that thrives in chaos or some sort of conflict with creativity."
  • Following the announcement that Cyrus was splitting from her husband, Liam Hemsworth, the singer jetted off in August 2019 to Lake Como, Italy, with reality star Kaitlynn Carter. The singer posted a set of photos of them kissing and the press spotted them in LA looking loved up, only for the pair to call it quits after a month together. After Cyrus dropped this song, many fans expressed their belief it is about her short-lived romance with Carter.
  • Cyrus wrote this lighters-up anthem with:

The songwriting trio of Ali Tamposi, Andrew Watt and Louis Bell, who often work together. Among their other collaborations is the Plastic Hearts lead single, "Midnight Sky."

OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder, who contributed to four Plastic Hearts songs including the title track. Tedder has had huge success penning hit singles for such female artists as Leona Lewis ("Bleeding Love"), Beyoncé ("Halo"), Adele ("Rumour Has It"), and Ellie Goulding ("Burn").

Andrew Watt and Louis Bell also produced the track.
  • Miley Cyrus and Alana O'Herlihy directed the song's music video. They filmed it during the TikTokTailgate pre-game show for Super Bowl LV on February 7, 2021, where she performed for vaccinated health care workers. It was Cyrus' first major COVID-19-compliant live show.

O'Herlihy previously co-directed Cyrus' "Prisoner" video.
  • Despite the absence of support from Cyrus' former record label, the song has managed to maintain its popularity since its release. From January to July 2023, "Angels Like You" roared to life on social media platforms, particularly on TikTok, where it became a popular soundtrack for various videos. In the Philippines, it topped the chart for four weeks during the summer of 2023, making Miley Cyrus the first female artist with multiple #1 hits on the official chart, having previously topped it with "Flowers."
