Songfacts®:

  • This break-up track finds Miley Cyrus experiencing a range of emotions about her ex. She knows she ended things the right way, but still misses him, though she knows she shouldn't. Miley still thinks about her former boyfriend and feels "high" when she recalls their time together.
  • Miley Cyrus recorded the song for Plastic Hearts. The singer's divorce from Australian actor Liam Hemsworth shaped much of the album.
  • Mark Ronson co-produced the song. Cyrus and the Anglo-American producer first got together after her appearance on the November 4, 2017 episode of Saturday Night Live. Her performance attracted Ronson's attention, and they recorded some tunes for his Late Night Feelings album, including the hit single "Nothing Breaks Like A Heart." He later collaborated with Cyrus on three Plastic Heart tracks.

"When I called Mark that day to get in the studio, I had said to him 'I was gonna call you, or someone that I shouldn't,'" Cyrus explained to New Zealand's The Edge radio about this song's background. "This was also at the time when I was working on getting sober and kind of figuring out sobriety and was like, if I can't get high, I'm just going to write about it."
  • Miley Cyrus co-wrote the track with country singer-songwriter Caitlyn Smith, and with Jennifer Decilveo (Andra Day's "Rise Up," Anne-Marie's "Ciao Adios," Demi Lovato's "I Love Me").
  • Cyrus also supplied the backing vocals. Ronson tweeted: "Honestly, High is one of the most beautiful vocals/melodies I've ever recorded. And wait til you hear the harmonies."
  • Ronson co-produced the soulful breakup song with Andrew Watt (Camila Cabello's "Havana," 5 Seconds of Summer's "Youngblood," Miley Cyrus' "Midnight Sky") and Take a Daytrip (Sheck Wes' "Mo Bamba," Kid Cudi and Travis Scott's "The Scotts" and Lil Nas X's "Industry Baby").
  • The musicians are:

    Guitar: Leo Abrahams
    Lap Steel Guitar: Ben Lester
Acoustic Guitar: Leo Abrahams and Jennifer Decilveo
    Percussion: Mark Ronson
Keyboard: Mark Ronson, Andrew Watt and Take a Daytrip.
  • Caitlyn Smith recorded her own twangy version of "High," making it the title track of her 2022 studio album.
