Songfacts®:

  • After spending her early teen years playing the wholesome lead in the Disney TV series Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus began to rebel. By the time she released her fourth album Bangerz in 2013, she had adopted a highly sexual persona and was open about her use of cannabis.

This song features Miley flaunting her rebellious personality by referring to herself as a freak, a Nile crocodile, a piranha and a witch. She goes on to insinuate that she inherits her in-your-face attitude from her mom.

    I'm nasty, I'm evil
Must be something in the water or that I'm my mother's daughter

Miley's mom Tish Cyrus is an actress and producer.
  • Miley co-wrote the song Finnish pop star Alma. Her 2017 solo song "Chasing Highs" was a hit throughout Europe.
  • The track was produced by Miike Snow's Andrew Wyatt. He also contributed to the writing of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's A Star Is Born duet "Shallow."
  • Miley Cyrus is joined by a diverse cast of women for the song's music video. The clip was conceptualized by the singer-director Alexandre Moors (Mario's "Somebody Else," Kendrick Lamar's "I").

We see Miley, dressed in a red latex bodysuit, leading the women to communicate the video's message of self-expression, body image, sexuality, and empowerment. The visual includes transgender models Aaron Philip and Casil McArthur, body-positive model and actress Angelina Duplisea, dancers Melanie Sierra, Paige Fralix and Amazon Ashley, queer skater Lacey Baker, 11-year-old philanthropist Mari Copeny, activist Tydryn Scott and model Vendela. Miley's mother Tish Cyrus is also featured.
  • This won for Best Editing and Best Art Direction at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards.
