Songfacts®:

  • Over Middle Eastern inspired instrumentation, Miranda Lambert sings about a drifter floating from city to city:

    Highway vagabonds, living like hippies
Moving right along to the next big city

Lambert is comparing the life of a traveling musician to that of a drifter. Both have a gypsy heart and a restless spirit. They prefer to follow the beat of their own drum rather than being tied down to a 9-5 job.
  • The song was written by singer-songwriter Luke Dick (Eric Church's "Kill a Word") with regular Miranda Lambert collaborators Natalie Hemby and Shane McAnally. When Luke Dick performed the song in August 2016 at the Basement East in Nashville, prior to the release of Wings' tracklist, he teased that someone had put it on hold.
  • Lambert named her January-March 2017 series of concerts the Highway Vagabond Tour.
