Songfacts®:

  • Missy Elliott dropped this stadium banger on Sunday February 7, 2016 just in time for the Super Bowl 50 matchup between the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers. Elliott has a history with the big game: In 2015 she invigorated the Super Bowl halftime show with bits of "Get Ur Freak On," "Lose Control" and "Work It" in a surprise appearance (Katy Perry was the headliner).
  • A pep rally is a gathering of people, typically students before a sports event. Pharrell Williams' production featuring blaring trumpets, a marching band drumline, whistles and cheers, is very much his take on such an event.
  • The song soundtracked an ad for Amazon's Echo speaker, which aired during Super Bowl 50. The commercial features former Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino, actors Alec Baldwin and Jason Schwartzman, plus Missy Elliott herself.
