Songfacts®:

  • "Thank You Mama" is a track from The Promise, which was produced by Ryder's friend and fellow Detroit native Don Was. Ryder, who is best known as the frontman of Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels ("Devil With A Blue Dress"), wrote this song about his parents. Ryder couldn't go to the funeral of either his mother of father, and says that a promoter even threatened to sue him if he went to this father's funeral. He says he wrote the song, "because I needed to get it out of my system. I never got to tell them thank you," he reveals, "because I needed to get it out of my system. I never got to tell them thank you."
