Songfacts®:

  • Love isn't enough to sustain a relationship in this lonely track from Moby. He explained on his website: "'Dream About Me' is a song about being in a flawed relationship that, although flawed, is still warm and intimate and loving. It's a song about being part of a couple but still feeling like an isolated individual and recognizing that it's impossible to find complete fulfillment through another person even if the two people in the couple genuinely love one another."
  • Moby shares lead vocals with Laura Dawn, who at the time was the cultural director of the progressive political advocacy group MoveOn.org. In 2007, Moby and Dawn formed the bluesy rock band The Little Death.
  • This was the fourth overall single (the third in the UK) released from Hotel, Moby's seventh studio album. It was also the only single that didn't appear on any charts.
  • Moby, who earned his reputation in the '90s as the King of Techno, strays into alt-rock territory on Hotel. The experiment didn't last long: His next release, Last Night, is an EDM record built around a night of clubbing in New York City.
  • The animated music video, directed by Hugo Ramirez (Moby's "Slipping Away"), begins with a litter of kittens getting dropped off by a spaceship on a city street, where pedestrians are eager to claim them. Sadly, one kitten isn't chosen and embarks on a dangerous journey through the bustling city, where he narrowly avoids getting trampled underfoot and attacked by irate dogs. Meanwhile, he can only escape his plight through his dreams of a beautiful paradise. In reality, he finally finds safety by climbing to the top of a tree that overlooks the cityscape, where we see numerous other spaceships hovering in the distance and perhaps housing other lonely kittens like him.
