Songfacts®:

  • Moby explained the meaning behind this rock-edged dance tune: "'Raining Again' is about a relationship that's falling apart while the world seems to be falling apart at the same time. Almost a 'mise en scene' where in the foreground a relationship is crumbling and in the background the world is crumbling, too."
  • Following "Lift Me Up," this was released as a single in mainland Europe. It peaked at #23 on the UK Dance Chart.
  • On this album, Moby strayed from using vocal samples and mostly relied on his own voice despite its shortcomings. He told Shakenstir: "I'd written these songs and most of them were fairly personal, so it just made sense for me to sing them and luckily there's a lot you can do in the studio to take even a poor, weak voice sound passable, and so that's what we did."
  • This features backing vocals from Broadway performer Shayna Steele, who also sings on "Lift Me Up."
  • In the music video, directed by Barnaby Roper, Moby and his band perform this in a darkened space that's lit up by a swirl of twinkling bulbs that are reflected in the singer's glasses. Roper, along with his frequent co-director Scott Lyon, also helmed Moby's "Find My Baby" video.
  • Moby became an unexpected pop phenomenon with the release of Play, an electronic album built on samples of field recordings of blues and gospel singers, in 1999. He followed up with 18 in a similar vein before shifting to the guitar-and-pop vibe on Hotel. According to Moby, the latter album was a purposeful aim at commerciality and ended up being a "conventional generic record." It reached the Top 10 in several countries, including the UK, where it peaked at #8.
