Songfacts®:

  • Mongrel released Better Than Heavy in the UK, via The Independent newspaper. It marked the first time that a band has given away their debut album for free.
  • Mongrel are a British supergroup made up of former Arctic Monkeys bassist Andy Nicholson, his former Monkeys bandmate Matt Helders, Jon McClure and Joe Moskow from Reverend and the Makers, Babyshambles guitarist Drew McConnell and British/Iraqi rapper Lowkey.
  • Lyrically Better Than Heavy's content is mainly political, with the majority of the songs challenging government issues. The free distribution of the album allowed hundreds of thousands of British people to hear Mongrel's songs. McClure commented to The London Times July 29, 2009: "Apart from Take That, more people have the Mongrel album than any other album released this year. Which is subversion, fundamentally."
