Songfacts®:

  • The Missy Elliott-produced lead single from American R&B recording artist Monica's seventh album, New Life, features rappers Rick Ross and Lil' Kim and was premiered in July 2011.
  • The song samples the late Notorious B.I.G.'s controversial hip-hop tune, "Who Shot Ya," which was originally released as a B-side to his 1995 hit single, "Big Poppa." At the time many rap fans interpreted the song to be a diss track directed at Tupac Shakur as it was released just two months after the West Coast rapper was shot five times and robbed after entering the lobby of Quad Recording Studios in Manhattan.
  • Monica's opening lines, "Like sweet morning dew/ I take one look at you/ And it was plain to see/ You were my destiny," borrows from Mary J. Blige's 1995 hit, "You're All I Need to Get By."
  • Having originally being credited as the second official feature alongside Ross on the initial version of "Anything," Lil Kim was reportedly removed at the last minute due to contractual issues. The reason given was that the "Who Shot Ya?" sample that she used in her part was revoked by the Notorious B.I.G.'s mother, Volleta Wallace, the head of the late rapper's estate.
  • The song peaked at #25 on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, making it Monica's least successful lead single since 2002's "All Eyez on Me." Because of its poor commercial performance, the tune was only included on the deluxe edition of New Life.
