Songfacts®:

  • Monsters of Folk were a side project for Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes, and indie singer-songwriter Matt (M.). Ward. Mogis recalled to Express Night Out: "It's one of Matt's that he didn't have finished and he just sort of strummed it on guitar. Every single song that everyone brought forth we ended up completing. Some of them, like 'Baby Boomer' and 'Goodway' were two songs of Matt's that were just not done. 'Baby Boomer' - that one was one we recorded in Malibu and that session was six days long and we hired an in-house engineer. So, on that particular group of songs, as a band, the four of us sat there and jammed on songs, which we didn't necessarily do that the first time around. The point is there weren't any ideas for drums and bass and structure of that song, it just had a little part. He did have - lyrically speaking - there was repetition that he had that I remember Jim and Conor sorted out. He did have the majority of the lyrics done, but not all of them. Entirely everything that Connor sings he wrote. Any of the ones that feature the changing of the vocals were kind of incomplete songs, so people would inevitably want to help pitch in to finish them."
  • A "Baby Boomer" is a term that originated in America. It refers to a person born just after the Second World War during the "baby boom," when couples who could not afford families during the Great Depression and the war made up for lost time. It was intended to appeal to those who had reached maturity during the 1960s.
