Songfacts®:

  • The "27 Club" is the list of notable musicians who died at age 27. Among them: Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse and Jimi Hendrix. Most of these bold-faced names died from drug or alcohol overdoses.

In the song, Morgan Wade celebrates making it to 28, knowing she won't be a member of the 27 Club. Morgan Wade beat her addiction to alcohol years earlier but is always wary of a relapse, knowing her personality type and history of mental health issues.
  • Wade wrote the song in three different stages, the first two before she turned 27. She finished the song soon after turning 28.
  • "27 Club" is the closing track on Psychopath, Morgan Wade's second album as a solo artist. Born and raised in rural Virginia, she planned a career in health care before veering into music. Her song "The Night" earned her a wide fan base when she released it in 2019, which led to a deal with Arista Nashville.
  • Wade often writes with others, but this one she wrote by herself. It was produced by Sadler Vaden of the 400 Unit; he also produced Wade's first album, Reckless.
