Songfacts®:

  • "Walked On Water" is a very intense song about a brutal breakup. In 2023, Morgan Wade was rumored to be dating Kyle Richards from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, but they both kept that relationship private.

Wade hasn't said if a specific person influenced the song, but she has been very forthright about her struggles with alcoholism and mental health, which she touches on in this track. The feeling that she could "walk on water" came when she was drinking, roughly from ages 19-22 as her music career was just getting started. She's now tenuously sober, knowing something like a breakup could send her back to the bottle and trigger a downward spiral.
  • Kesha duets with Wade on this tender piano ballad. After a conversation on a beach in Malibu, she joined Wade in the studio that same night to record her feature. Wade has been a longtime admirer of Kesha since her high school days, and was thrilled to get the chance to collaborate with the pop star.
  • Check out this line in Kesha's verse:

    I might lose to myself
Hell, I might just give up

This is a great way to express that feeling of desperation when your mind goes to a dark place. Like Wade, Kesha has been very open about her mental health struggles (and her eating disorder) and has made it a theme in some of her songs. Kesha feels that being open about what she went through is a good way to help others who are struggling.
  • "Walked on Water" is a solo write by Wade from her third album, Obsessed. She recorded much of the record in an impromptu and haphazard manner, choosing obscure, hole-in-the-wall studios scattered across the US, from Mississippi to Kansas City to Nebraska. This unconventional recording process allowed Wade to work with local talent and capture a raw, genuine sound, a stark contrast to the over-polished finish typical of big studio productions.
  • Kesha's mother, Pebe Sebert, is a successful country songwriter. Her work has influenced Kesha's musical career, so the pop star's collaboration with Morgan Wade is not surprising.
