Songfacts®:

  • In "865," Morgan Wallen is drowning glasses of Jack Daniel's to get his former lover off his mind, but it has the opposite effect: Emboldened by the alcohol, he drunk-dials his ex.
  • I know I told you I wouldn't call and I tried
But this bottle tastes like 865 (409-1021)

When a phone number is dialed in a TV show or movie, they usually use a fake one starting with 555. However, "865" is the actual area code for Knoxville, the largest city in East Tennessee. Wallen hails from the East Tennessee town of Sneedville, in Hancock County, which sits just to the northeast of the 865 county group.

"865-409-1021" is a working number that dials up a company called U.S. TelePunch, who offers businesses a way to connect their remote employees.
  • After Blake Pendergrass and John Byron wrote the song, they sent it to Wallen with the title of "919" (The area code for Raleigh, North Carolina), The country star explained that changed it to 865, the area code for Knoxville Tennessee, because, "865 is the area code that I use, and if I hear those 3 digits, it takes me back to place or time. It just makes me think of home. I thought it was a unique in the way that they used it."
"And also," he added, "whoever's number that is, I am extremely sorry."
  • This is a track from Dangerous: The Double Album, which Wallen split into two halves. "865" is on Side A, which is a more personal look at the country star's life, while side B finds him highlighting his rowdy, party side. Alcohol is a common denominator between both sides of the record.
