Songfacts®:

  • Morgan Wallen grew up in the rural stretches of Sneedville and Knox County, Tennessee. When he moved to Nashville to pursue his rising music career, it didn't take long before he was signed to Big Loud Records. His debut single, "The Way I Talk," is his way of introducing himself to the world.
  • "The Way I Talk" is a musical business card, telling listeners, "Hey, this is me, thick drawl and all." With lyrics that state, "Man it ain't my fault, I just live the way I talk," Wallen owns his accent and his Southern roots like a badge of honor.
  • The song, penned by Jessi Alexander, Ben Hayslip and Chase McGill, struck a chord with Wallen right away. He immediately knew it would be the track to kick off his career.

"I wanted to put a song out there to let people know who I was and, at the same time, help me set apart from a lot of different people in country radio," he explained to Billboard. "I kind of have an interesting, unique vocal thing as well."
  • The music video, directed by TK McKamy, takes viewers to Wallen's Tennessee roots. We see him goofing around with his sister and his real-life buddies, chasing chickens and boxing for kicks.
  • The song reached #35 on the Country chart and has been certified 3× Platinum in the United States, indicating sales of 3 million units.
  • The University of Tennessee Volunteers adopted "The Way I Talk" as their fourth-quarter anthem, playing it for the first time on October 12, 2024. It's a far cry from Garth Brooks' classic "Friends In Low Places," which the team had been using for years, but when Wallen croons about "cheering on the Volunteers," it's as if he'd recorded the tune just for them.
