Songfacts®:

  • "Thought You Should Know" depicts a pensive Morgan Wallen making a call to his mom, Lesli, while on tour. He acknowledges making poor decisions, chasing women and drinking too much, but is grateful for the prayers she sends up for him. He assures her those prayers aren't wasted, and he's finally settling down. The song is a testament to how they got through.
  • Morgan Wallen co-wrote the candid song with Miranda Lambert and Lambert's frequent writing partner, Nicolle Galyon, in August 2020.

Lambert had met up with Galyon the day before. As fate would have it, after another writer canceled, Galyon extended an invitation to Lambert to join their writing session, which she eagerly accepted. The talented trio spent the next day crafting three songs, soaking in the beautiful Tennessee weather on Galyon's porch while they worked.

"It was one of those magic moments where everything just worked," Lambert recalled to American Songwriter of penning the hit tune. "[He said,] 'I want to write a song for my mom.' I'm like, 'I'm all about that and you picked the two right girls.' It just fell out."
  • Wallen first teased "Thought You Should Know" on May 22, 2021, when he uploaded a video onto Instagram of himself performing the track. He shared it a few months after being caught on camera drunkenly yelling the n-word at a white buddy. "I wrote this song for my mom a while ago, seemed like an appropriate time to share it," Wallen said before his emotional solo acoustic performance.
  • Wallen officially released the song on May 6, 2022, just in time for Mother's Day. A month previously, he'd dropped another personal track, "Don't Think Jesus," for Easter.
  • "Thought You Should Know" landed at #1 on the Country chart, Morgan Wallen's fifth leader overall. It was his second consecutive single to debut at the chart's summit, following "Don't Think Jesus."
