Songfacts®:

  • "That's How People Grow Up" finds Morrissey putting a breakup in perspective. "There are things worse in life than never being someone's sweetie," he concludes.

Morrissey wrote it with his guitarist, Boz Boorer. Boorer has collaborated with Morrissey on a number of other singles, including the 1994 UK Top 10 hit "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get."
  • The American singer-songwriter Kristeen Young supplied the operatic background vocals. Young opened for Morrissey during his 2006-07 "Ringleader of the Tormentors" tour.
  • Along with "All You Need Is Me," "That's How People Grow Up" was one of two new songs released on Morrissey's 2008 Greatest Hits album. Both songs also appear on his 2009 album Years Of Refusal.
