Songfacts®:

  • This track is one of four new songs Mötley Crüe recorded for the companion soundtrack of their biographical musical comedy-drama film The Dirt. They laid the tunes down in late 2018 with longtime producer Bob Rock.
  • Vince Neil sings of Mötley Crüe's hedonistic past and their survival. The song also features a verse from Machine Gun Kelly which contains plenty of references to the band's sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle.
  • Machine Gun Kelly plays Crüe drummer Tommy Lee in the film. The rapper won his part after six auditions over the course of two and a half years. The first two, he was auditioning for Nikki Sixx, and then the last four for Tommy Lee.
  • Machine Gun Kelly joined Mötley Crüe onstage at Atlanta for the live debut of "The Dirt (Est. 1981)." The performance took place on June 16, 2022, during the opening night of The Stadium Tour.
