Songfacts®:

  • On their first album, L.D. 50 (released in 2000), the masked marauders of Mudvayne included "Dig," a song that takes aim at the music industry.

Lead singer Chad Gray didn't take it well when certain record company executives offered their unsolicited advice. "People putting their two cents worth into your art that have nothing to do with art on any level; they're completely business, but they think they know the best thing for you," is how he described them in a Songfacts interview.

Maybe the folks at Epic Records knew what they were doing: The L.D. 50 album went Gold and established the band as one of the top new metal acts of the decade. "Dig," released as the first single, made #33 on the Mainstream Rock chart.
  • The video was directed by Thomas Mignone, who also did the videos for Slipknot's "Wait and Bleed" and Sepultura's "Roots." The clip got a lot of spins on MTV2 and was the first recipient of the "MTV2 Award," given at the MTV Video Music Awards to videos that launched on the network. This award was discontinued in 2006.
  • Alex Terrible of the deathcore band Slaughter To Prevail released a popular cover of "Dig" in 2021 that earned million of views on YouTube. Chad Gray loves it. "It is heavy as f--k," he told Rock Feed.
