Typical

Album: Mutemath (2007)
Play Video

Songfacts®:

  • This song is about breaking free from a restrictive situation (or "the typical") to reach an as yet undiscovered new level in life.
  • The official video for "Typical" was directed by Israel Anthem. It features Mutemath performing the song backwards. All band members had to learn to play the track in reverse for the video shoot. The "Typical" video was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Short Form Video. In our interview, Darren King poked fun at the somewhat futile nomination: "For the rest of our career, we get to say "Grammy nominated band." We don't have to say what it was for. (Laughing)." Mutemath re-enacted the "Typical" video during a live performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, using the same reverse playback technique used in the original video.
  • "Typical" was Mutemath's debut single. It features on the band's self-titled debut album, which was released in 2006.
  • This song features in 2008 movie, The Rocker, and the 2009 remake of The Stepfather.
