Songfacts®:

  • This song is about a guy (most likely a nerdy, self-conscious guy), who falls in love with a girl who works a few cubicles down from him in an office, but she leaves and his world falls apart. The whole CD has a lot to do with classic movie plots, with themes of vampires, zombies, office romance and lovers running from the law together. >>

  • This song is about rejection, but it's framed in the context of everyday office life. He writes love notes to a girl every day, but never has the nerve to give them to her, so tears them up and throws them out of the window. Then eventually, she switches jobs, and he says that whoever takes her place in her cubicle, it will only be a temporary stand in for her. And he starts to think that he's never going to meet anyone and he'll die alone. He imagines things they could have done together, that he knows they will never do because he would never talk to her. It's about loving someone that you see regularly, but they don't even realize you exist. >>

  • Gaby from UsThe explanation is so heteronormative ew. It was probably written a long time ago but it needs an update, especially since it's only a fan speculation
  • Uv from HellI think that this song is about a guy who falls in love with a girl, she changes jobs, and he slowly realizes she was the only thing keeping him alive.
  • Keanu Reeves from Russia2nd best song from this album (behind drowning lessons of course)
  • Rae from Buxton, NcThis song is so awesome, one of my favorites of all time
  • Paula from Mahanoy City, PaThis song is actually a true story. Gerard Way was a cartoonist in NYC when he was younger. He fell in love with a girl who worked "only two cubes down" and was heartbroken when she left. Cute, but sad.
  • Angela from Cartersville, Georgiawow i feel that way a lot, i like someone who doesn't even know i exist and he sits right beside me in math!! i think he doesn't know i exsist because i dress diffrently than he does.. love freakin sucks =(
  • Rose from Dumfries, United KingdomI think this song is about the worthless empty feeling you get in your stomach when you're in love and you're unsure about the other person's feelings or when someone openly rejects you and unknowingly destroys you inside. Couldn't the tearing sound of love notes be the girl tearing the notes and making him feel bad?
  • Leanne from Dublin, IrelandThis album tells a story and the song, I think is just another part to it. At this stage in the album (second last song) I think the main character has killed his partner and has realized now that he regrets it because his lover is irreplacable. He says she is gone and when he fills her place its a "temporary" stand in for her showing he wants to join his lover in the after life. He goes on to say he would love to die alone because he could then have a relationship with his lover again. In the last song he remembers good times they shared that out do all the bad things that forced him to kill her in the first place and as a way of undoing it he kills himself and they are reunited ( and as were falling down touching hands in this pool of blood I'll see you eyes)
  • Ang from St. Louis, Mo:( This song kinda relates to me, but in a different way. I liked this guy in my section of the school band last year, but he never realized it even though he sat right next to me the whole year (he was 1st chair and I was 2nd practically the whole time). And by the end of the school year, he had found out, but never said anything to me and then he went to a different school since he was a year older than me. They ended up filling his place with some other little kid a year younger than me this year... its kinda sad that I still like him.
  • Elizabeth from J-ville, Flits mostly about office love, though. not at all about vampires or anything...
  • Cassie from Somewhere, Nci feel the same way Gerard does. I want someone but they dont want me. Actually we have a good friendship but idk if he wants me. LOVE SUCKS. Period. lol.But anyway, i love this song. One of my favorites on the album.
  • Chris from Tampa Bay, Fli always kinda thought that this song was like talking about a guy in love with a girl who died (you dont work here anymore) and the girl never noticed the guy..and he never had a chance to talk to her or anything and MCR used the office as a metaphor, but w/e i may be wrong, either way great song
  • Mercedes from St. Marys, CanadaThis song is also about wanting someone so badly, but not being able to have them. It is also supposed to relate to school. The line 'The tearing sound of love notes...' describes the guy writing love notes but being to shy or whatnot to give them to her. Then, she leaves, and it's too late.
  • Amina from Manchester, Englandomg this song is soo cool!i never knew what i meant.thanks jay LOL
