Songfacts®:

  • Natasha Bedingfield said in an interview in the 2005 BRITS magazine about this song, "I had this feeling when we were in the studio that it would do well. It was funny, because it was one of those real writer's block situations and the song just wasn't coming. Then I was just being stupid and sang 'I love you, I love you, I love you!' I was just at my wit's end and just wanted to say what I meant in a simple way, without using all those flowery words, and it was that moment that we were like, 'Yeah, that's a hit!"
  • Andrew Frampton, who in 2001 co-wrote S Club 7's UK chart topper "Have You Ever" wrote this with Bedingfield.
  • When this song hit #1 in the UK, Natasha and Daniel Bedingfield became the first brother and sister ever to have separate solo UK #1 hits. Daniel had already hit the top spot three times, first with "Gotta Get Thru This" in 1999.
  • Two music videos were made. The UK version, directed by Scott Lyon and Sophie Muller, follows Bedingfield in and around a Spanish villa, where she tries to break through her writer's block. The US version, directed by Chris Milk, was filmed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and features dancing boomboxes.
  • A remix by electronic DJ Badger returned "These Words" to the UK Top 40 in 2024.
