Songfacts®:

  • "Forget All About It" is the first song on Nazz Nazz, the second album from Todd Rundgren's '60s band the Nazz. He wrote the song, which is his take on how to deal with the pressures in life and the existential despair that comes with it ("every minute you live takes you a minute towards when you must die..."). The solution: Forget all about it a while.
  • The Nazz Nazz album was inspired by The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, a groundbreaking concept album from 1967. Instead of serving as a standalone single, "Forget All About It" was meant to introduce a musical journey. Note the last line: "If you haven't got time to rest, then take the record off now."
  • The Nazz, from Philadelphia, didn't make much impact when they were active but found a following later as listeners discovered them by tracking back Todd Rundgren's career. They formed in 1967 and released their first album, Nazz, in 1968. The lead single, "Open My Eyes," underwhelmed, reaching just #112. The next single, "Hello It's Me," did better (#71) but was still seldom heard. Rundgren took more control of the group for the Nazz Nazz album, which caused a lot of tension, particularly between him and the group's lead singer, Stewkey Antoni. Rundgren left around the time the album was released, and the group folded soon after.

In his years with the Nazz, Rundgren developed his skills as a songwriter, producer, and vocalist. He revived "Hello It's Me" on his 1972 solo album, Something/Anything?, and this time it was a hit, climbing to #5.
