Songfacts®:

  • Having reached his eighth decade, Neil Young naturally is thinking more about mortality. Indeed, death is a recurring theme on the Colorado album. Here, he explores the idea of the human spirit moving through the natural world, having passed into birds and animals. "It's just a feeling," Young told Mojo magazine. "It's the way I think things are. You can tell that we're all part of the same thing. It's pretty obvious."
  • Young plays his signature harmonica at the beginning and end of the song.
  • Neil Young starts off the song with a reference to Canada geese.

When you see those geese in the skies, think of me
I can spread my wings and fly just like them

The Canada goose has always been a big part of Young's life. "Being Canadian and seeing them in the sky all the time and when I see them, no matter where they are," he told Mojo magazine. "They could be in a park in New York or they could be anywhere they could be. They keep showing up in different places. They're beautiful birds. I just love them."
