Songfacts®:

  • "Do It" was co-written and co-produced by Timbaland. There has been an ongoing debate on the internet and in the media as to whether Timbaland ripped off the melody and chords for the song from "Acid Jazzed Evening," a 2000 recording by Finnish artist Tempest. Timbaland admitted in a radio interview to sampling the synth line but claimed that he borrowed it from a video game.
  • The song finds Furtado in the thrall of a guy - she wants all he has to offer. She wrote the song with Timbaland and Nate "Danja" Hills, Timbaland's right-hand man and co-producer. Furtado wrote a lot of personal songs on her previous album, Folklore, but for her Loose album, which includes "Do It," she wrote to more universal themes and crafted the words to fit the beats. The phrase "do it" has a nice percussive sound that goes with the groove.
  • "Do It" didn't do much damage in America, where it stalled at #88, but it did better in Europe, reaching the Top 10 in several countries, including Italy, Poland, Portugal and Turkey.

By the time it was released as a single in America, Furtado had already blanketed the charts with the Loose singles "Promiscuous," "Maneater," "Say It Right" and "All Good Things (Come To An End)." "Promiscuous" hit #1 in July 2006; "Do It" peaked at #88 in September 2007. And these weren't the only Timbaland productions on the chart: He had hits around this time with the Justin Timberlake tracks "My Love," "SexyBack" and "What Goes Around... Comes Around."
  • The music video was shot on a tour stop in Detroit. It has nothing to do with the song, and instead shows Furtado and two other young ladies hitting the town. They're dressed like they're going to the hottest club, but instead go to a dive bar called the Post Bar.
