Songfacts®:

  • New Boyz are Los Angeles hip-hop duo Ben J and Dominic Thomas (AKA Legacy). This song came with a dance called "Jerkin,'" which is a LA based craze, perpetuated by street culture and high school students alike. Though this wasn't the first jerk song, it was the first to get airplay on LA.'s urban radio stations.
  • Ben J told HipHopDX.com: "I would describe jerk music as just something you feel. It's positive, it's got all the teenagers to all the grannies, all the mamas. Everybody's cutting it and moving it, and everything that you would say. It's fun. It's like a movement."
  • The song's music video featured dancing by jerkin' crews The Power Ranger$ and Action Figures. American rappers Tyga and Paul Wall made cameo appearances in the clip.
  • The duo made this song at Ben J's house, laying down their vocals in a closet. Ben's mother even contributed to the track. Legacy explained to MTV News why they cut this song: "People were making jerkin' music, but nobody was like doing anything with it. We wanted to make it worldwide. This dance is crazy, and it got potential, so we wanted to make it worldwide. We made a jerkin' song. We made 'You're a Jerk,' which is like a double meaning. Jerkin' is just having a good time, you just grooving. Some people ain't capable of crumping. Their body can't do all that. Everybody can jerk, my grandma be jerkin'. His 4-year-old brother be jerkin'. It's just groovin'. It's positive."
