Songfacts®:

  • This reflective song showed a more mature side to the New Kids On The Block, who weren't so new anymore. The lyrics are a look back on the group's history and a thank you to the fans that supported them. These earlier New Kids hits all get a mention in the lyric:

    "Hangin' Tough"
    "The Right Stuff"
    "Please Don't Go Girl"
    "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)."
  • The group's creator and producer, Maurice Starr, wrote this with Al Lancellotti, a musician who worked on another song from the album with Starr as well: "Time Is on Our Side."
  • All five New Kids sing on this one in unison, reflecting cohesive nature of the group reflected in the lyric.
  • "Tonight" was the last Top 10 hit for New Kids On The Block, peaking at #7 in America. They were still a force to be reckoned with when they issued their Step By Step album in 1990, but had come down from the lofty peaks from a year earlier, when they had #1 hits with "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)" and "Hangin' Tough." The song "Step By Step" gave them another #1, with "Tonight" the next single from the album. The third single, "Let's Try It Again," topped out at #53. The group released another album in 1994 but split later that year, reuniting in 2008.
