Songfacts®:

  • Recorded in 1973, this tune covers some of the good old days when country singers made their way to LA for stardom in movies, music and more. Country-rock was on the verge or exploding into the mainstream and Barney's Beanery and the Troubadour were the local hangouts. When the New Riders, led by John Dawson, sing "Well, I know Kris and Rita, and Marty Mull are meeting at the Troubador," they are referring to actor Martin Mull, along with Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge, who were just married at the time. Their marriage lasted from 1973 - 1980.
Peter Rowan, a bluegrass musician who wrote and performed the song with Old and in the Way, originally sang different lyrics during rehearsals for that band's self-titled album earlier in the year:
I know all the stars in Hollywood
    Are meeting at the Troubador
We'll get it on with the band that's playing there
While the crowd calls out for more

  • We'll get it on with the Joy Of Cooking
While the crowd calls out for more

The Joy of Cooking was a California-based folk-rock ensemble closely tied to the hippie culture. They released three studio albums on Capitol Records in the early 1970s as well as a minor hit single in 1971, "Brownsville". With bandleaders Terry Garthwaite and Toni Brown, Joy of Cooking was one of the earliest female-fronted bands in rock music history. >>>
