Songfacts®:

  • In the '90s, Mary J. Blige was looking for "Real Love," Da Brat was after "Ghetto Love," and Next wanted some "Butta Love" - smooth and creamy.

It was the group's first single, typical of their Jodeci-like romantic R&B, and it did well, going to #16 in America. Their next single was just as lusty but with a little more tempo: "Too Close." That one was huge, going to #1 and helping their debut album, Rated Next, sell over 2 million copies.
  • Next were known as Straight4ward when they started working with Prof-T and Lance Alexander of the fellow Minneapolis group Lo-Key?, who worked on an early version of this song. They put it on a demo tape that got the attention of Naughty By Nature's KayGee, who signed them to his Divine Mill label, a division of Arista. KayGee and Darren Lighty did more work on the song, earning them credits as producers along with Alexander and Prof-T. Next lead singer RL Huggar is also credited as a writer along with Lighty and Arkeida Clowers.
