Songfacts®:

  • This uptempo pop song about a teenage love finds Niall Horan assuring his girlfriend they'll be together for eternity.

    There'll never be another
I promise that I'll love you for the rest of my life

Horan imagines a wedding scenario where he's wearing a black suit and his girl is in a white dress.

Yeah, I see us in black and white
Crystal clear on a starlit night
  • Horan explained to The Sun that he'd had the "black and white" title for a while and was wondering what he could do with it. He began thinking about a first love when a couple can't imagine being with anyone else. "That's it, me and you are getting married," he said. "I've seen it in the movies it looks exactly like this. So I just thought black and white would be like the black suit and white dress and it would become a bit of a wedding song."
  • Horan wrote the song with:

Frequent One Direction songwriter Julian Bunetta, who also produced the track.

Sean Mendes' go-to collaborators Teddy Geiger and Scott Harris.

Cuban-American songwriter Eskeerdo, who also collaborated on "Slow Hands."
  • Horan played "Black And White" during the One World: Together At Home event that supported frontline healthcare workers. After singing the song, he gave a shoutout to essential workers for their time and sacrifice during the global coronavirus pandemic.
  • The video shows Horan getting ready for a show before playing the song in front of a packed audience.
