Songfacts®:

  • This heartfelt ballad serves as a compassionate embrace for those grappling with challenges like depression. Niall Horan delves deep into the realm of emotions, inviting introspection and raising poignant questions about feeling detached and yearning for transformation.

    Can you feel what's beneath?
Is it stone cold under your feet?
Are you numb? Can you touch?
Is the silence a little too much?
  • The chorus serves as a powerful reminder that even when we feel depleted, our hearts continue to beat, providing us with the strength to confront any obstacle.

So, when you feel there's nothin' left
Oh, there's still a heart beatin' in your chest
And when you're runnin' from the flood
Oh, you've got nowhere left to run
  • The song's title weaves into this narrative as Niall Horan suggests that experiencing moments of sadness is a natural part of life. It's simply a scientific reality.

    It's just science
Don't let it break you down

The lyrics urge us not to let depression crush our spirits. Even is the depths, there's a glimmer of hope. However low we feel, there's always a beating heart within us.
  • Horan co-wrote "Science" with Jamie Scott, Daniel Bryer and Mike Needle. Scott, Bryer and Scott co-wrote four tracks on Horan's 2019 album Heartbreak Weather, including the single "Put A Little Love On Me."
  • Joel Little produced the understated, strings-laden song. Kiwi producer Little rose to renown as Lorde's collaborator on her debut album, Pure Heroine. He's also worked with Taylor Swift and Khalid.
  • "Science" is the ninth track on The Show. The song received pre-release buzz from a brief teaser of Horan singing the song on social media two days before he dropped the album.
