Songfacts®:

  • The second release off Last Year Was Complicated finds Nick Jonas ending his relationship with Olivia Culpio by sharing an expensive bottle: "Champagne Problems is a song about sharing a bottle of champagne with my now ex as we were breaking up to kind of close that chapter," the singer explained in a Reddit AMA. "It was sad and slightly sweet at the same time. It was a range of emotions and feelings and I think this song, although it sounds like a party song, actually has some of the deepest lyrics on the record."

Nick Jonas and former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo broke up in June 2015 after two years together. She reportedly inspired his hit single "Jealous."
  • Jonas explained the track's meaning to Entertainment Weekly: "The concept of the song, which maybe doesn't stand out on first listen, is 'You're amazing, you're all the things I hope to find with somebody, but timing, circumstances, all these things play into it not being right.' Champagne is amazing; it tastes delicious but gives you a really bad hangover."
