Songfacts®:

  • Minaj recounts her journey from early days struggling in the hood to her current success on this drum-fueled track. The song references the murder of Minaj's cousin Nicholas Telemaque, who was killed near his home in Brooklyn, New York in July 2011.
  • The lyric, "Bitches don't know the half like they flunked at math," was originally used by Minaj on "Click Clack" a track from her first mixtape Playtime Is Over.
  • "Champion" also features verses from Nas, Drake and Jeezy. "Nicki hit us up, I got love, so it was nothin' - I did the record," Nas told MTV News, before adding: "It's hip-hop music; music is music. If I feel it, I can get on it. I heard the track, I felt it, I loved it."
