Songfacts®:

  • This Nicki Minaj, Daniel Johnson and Ester Dean penned song is a track from the deluxe edition of Pink Friday. The Young Money diva explained the song's meaning to MTV News: "'Super Bass' is about the boy that you are crushing over," she said. "And you kind of want to get your mack on, but you're taking the playful approach."
  • A video was shot for the song in which Minaj can be seen in a skintight pink bodysuit wearing a half-blond and half-pink wig. She explained the focus behind the visual to MTV News: "I just wanted to do something real colorful and cutesy. This is an icy world, it's a sexy world, it's a playful world. Of course I have lots of eye candy for my girls and my boys."
  • After Taylor Swift stated that she's a fan of the song and played the track on air, Minaj indicated that the country star's unsolicited promotion of the track influenced the decision to release it as a single.
  • According to audience measurement company Rentrack, the song's video garnered a record-setting 1,436,807 page views in just one week on the Music Choice channel. This was the best one-week performance of a visual on the cable Video On Demand service since its launch in 2004.
  • The song peaked at #3 on the Hot 100 - the highest-charting hit by a solo female rapper (without the aid of a featured artist) since Missy Elliott's "Work It" reached #2 in 2002.
  • "Super Bass" was selected by the editors of Billboard magazine as their best song of 2011. "Pop's perfect storm in 2011, and the song that (rightfully) made Nicki a star," they said.
  • This was the most streamed song in the US (84 million times) in 2011. The music video was also the most watched one of that year.
  • Minaj performed the song on the Ellen show with the help of eight-year-old English fan Sophia Grace Brownlee and her five-year-old cousin Rosie. Their performance went viral on YouTube, accumulating more than 38 million views.
  • This song is a topic of conversation in the 2014 movie The Interview. In the film, James Franco's character interviews Minaj, asking her questions about her butt. When she objects to his line of questioning, he says it's fair game, since she has a song called "Superb Ass."
