Songfacts®:

  • Back in 1981, Rick James described himself as a "freak," meaning sexually adventurous, in his "Super Freak" single. Since then, countless hip-hop acts have adopted the slang term to describe their kinky sexual tastes. Nicki Minaj has often boasted of her sexual prowess and willingness to try anything between the sheets or elsewhere, so it's true-to-form she takes pride here in being a "super freaky girl."
  • The song opens with a vocal sample from "Super Freak," then Minaj raps her raunchy rhymes over its riff. MC Hammer previously sampled the same famous bass riff for his classic 1990 tune "U Can't Touch This."

Back in 2011, Minaj featured on the remix of Big Sean's "Dance (A$$)," which sampled "U Can't Touch This."
  • Minaj originally titled the song "Freaky Girl" and teased it on TikTok under that name. She had to change it because of legal issues, so she asked fans to choose between three different potential song names:

    "He Want A Freaky Girl"
    "Super Freaky Girl"
    "Nick James"

Though "Nick James" narrowly beat "Super Freaky Girl" in the fan vote, Minaj plumped for the latter title.
  • Minaj dropped "Super Freaky Girl" on August 12, 2022 as her first solo track since "Megatron" in June 2019. All of her releases between the two tracks had been collaborations. It arrived amid rising popularity on TikTok, in part because of a dance challenge created by user @lorddroman.
  • Minaj wrote "Super Freaky Girl" with LunchMoney Lewis, Lauren Miller, and the track's producers Dr. Luke, Aaron Joseph, and Vaughn Oliver. The writers of "Super Freak," Alonzo Miller and Rick James, also receive credits.
  • When this debuted at #1 on the Hot 100, it marked Nicki Minaj's third US chart-topping single, as well as her first #1 song as a solo artist (She'd previously reached the peak position with her appearances on Doja Cat's remix for "Say So" and 6ix9ine's "Trollz" single). Its bow at the summit made "Super Freaky Girl" the first solo female rap track to debut at #1 since Lauryn Hill's "Doo Wop (That Thing)" in 1998.
  • The Technicolor video places Minaj in a Desperate Housewives-esque setting. Alexander Ludwig (Hunger Games' Cato) portrays the Ken to her Barbie.
  • This won Best Song at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2022. Minaj also took home the Best Hip Hop Award.
  • "Super Freaky Girl" took Best Hip-Hop at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. Minaj hosted the show and also performed "Last Time I Saw You" and "Big Difference." She was even part of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop celebration, where she was the only female rapper.
